Long distance relations tend to go significant amounts of time apart, which results in utilizing the best means of communication. In the past this was writing letters and then a phone call here or there. Today, it is almost near impossible to be fully removed from access to communication. From Internet access, computers and cell phones there are many ways to communicate to make up for the lost time in long distance relations. When apart, as compared to the past, is more worry generated from being so connected or does it put the soul at easy that you can be connected at the touch of your fingertips?

In understanding the relationship between the digital age and long distance interpersonal communications, there are different components involved in different aspects of people's’ lives. The digital age has redefined the 21st century as more and more people are using mobile devices and technology, both personally and at work. Technology is more than at our fingertips, it is around us. Questions that are asked about this revolve around the notion of an “electronic leash”. Does communicating with one another have us on this “electronic leash”, or rather have us constantly connected while feeling like we should always be connected. With so many social apps and stimulating media on the web, how easy is it to remove focus from it and be more in the now rather than always checking Facebook or Twitter. The definition of an electronic leash is more of a cultural term rather than a specific definition, referring to a mobile device or constant way to be connected.
